Rogaland kunstsenter åpner ny utstilling torsdag 4. februar 19.00 med Melanie Bonajo
Melanie Bonajo har en omfattende og mangefassetert produksjon som billedkunstner, musiker, skribent og kurator. Gjennom denne rikdommen i uttrykksformer utforsker og utfordrer hun grenseoppganger i det moderne menneskes forhold til seksualitet, spiritualitet, varer og natur.
Hovedverkene i utstillingen er to filmer, Fake Paradise (2014) og Economy of Love (2015) som er en del av trilogien Night Soil. Fake Paradise skildrer folks opplevelser med ayahuasca, et hallusinogen fra Amazonas, som nå har fått samme status som LSD hadde på 60-tallet. Economy of Love tar utgangspunkt i et miljø av aktivistiske sexarbeidere i Brooklyn. I tillegg til de to filmene presenter vi et utvalg av visuelt materiale fra Bonajos produksjon som danner et slags kart over kunstnerens interesser.
Bonajo kontrer den kapitalistiske tidsånden med kropp og sjel, gjennom aktiviteter som av ulike årsaker oppfattes som ulovlige. Bonajo jobber for å oppdatere vår oppfatning av det moderne mennesket i forhold til teknologi og forståelse av oss selv som mennesker. Selv om tematikken er alvorlig sørger kunstneren for at det finnes en god dose humor i mange av arbeidene og en sensualitet som akademiske teorier om temaene ikke innehar. Rommene på kunstsenteret har blitt omdannet til sensoriske soner hvor du kan flyte rundt, få informasjon og kanskje oppleve noe nytt.
Melanie Bonajo har stilt ut internasjonalt i De Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam; Centre for Contemporary Art, Warsaw; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Moscow Biennale; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, og PPOW Gallery, New York. Filmene hennes har blitt vist på festivaler som International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) og the Berlinale. I 2012 started hun kollektivet Genital International. Bonajo har bidratt til flere publikasjoner, har vært redaktør for Capricious Magazine, og gitt ut flere bøker som Modern Life of the Soul, I Have a Room with Everything, Spheres og Furniture Bondage. Hun har kuratert utstillinger som QQC Performance Festival om popmusikk i billedkunst ved Paradiso, Amsterdam. I 2013 ga hun ut albumet Inua med bandet ZaZaZoZo. Bonajo studerte ved Gerrit Rietveld Academy og har hatt kunstneropphold ved ISCP i New York (2014) og ved Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst i Amsterdam (2009-10). Hun bor og arbeider i Amsterdam og New York. Melanie Bonajo har mottatt Rogaland Kunstsenters produksjonsstipend fra Bildende Kunstneres Hjelpefond.

Melanie Bonajo has an extensive and multifaceted practice as an artist, musician, writer and curator. Through this rich tapestry of media and expression, the artist explores and challenges the boarders of contemporary human relations to gender, transcendence, commodity and nature.
The main works in the exhibition are Fake Paradise (2014) and Economy of Love (2015), both parts of a trilogy of videos called Night Soil. Fake Paradise tells the story of several people’s experiences using ayahuasca, a hallucinogen from the Amazonas, which has a similar status as LSD did in the 60s. Economy of Love follows a community of activist sex workers in Brooklyn. In addition to the two films we present a selection of visual material from Bonajo’s production, which can be seen as a map to the artists interests and themes.
Bonajo counters the capitalist zeitgeist with body and soul, often looking at activities that are for different reasons looked upon as illegal or taboo. The works update our perception of modern humanity in relationship to technology in our daily lives, and how we perceive ourselves. Even though the themes and issues in the work are serious, there is a humorous playfulness to the works, and a sensuality that academic theories are void of. The rooms at the art centers are transformed into sensory zones where you can float around, get information in a new way and perhaps experience something new.

Bonajo has contributed to several publications, has been editor for Capricious Magazine, and published several books like Modern Life of the Soul, I Have a Room with Everything, Spheres and Furniture Bondage. She has curated exhibitions like the QQC Performance Festival about pop music in contemporary art in at Paradiso, Amsterdam. In 2013 she released the album INUA with her band ZaZaZoZo. Bonajo studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and has been awarded residencies at the ISCP in New York (2014) and Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam (2009-10). She lives and works in Amsterdam and New York.
