Rogaland Kunstsenter viser den første soloutstillingen til den amerikanske kunstneren Matt Keegan i Norge. Portable Document Format er et tilbakeblikk over kunstnerens skulpturer siden 2006. De opprinnelige materialene var gipsplater og stål, men på kunstsenteret blir skulpturene presentert i papp. Papparbeidene har blitt til på stedet og på Grafisk Verksted, og vil bli resirkulert ved utstillingens slutt. Mange av arbeidene inkluderer tekst, ofte med en viss humor, eller som et slags dekorativt mønster som repeteres.

Gipsplater, metallplater og papp kommer i standardiserte størrelser for å sikre en billig pris, og en effektiv prosess, men disse materialene kan gjøres om til nesten hva som helst. Denne effektiviteten er et aspekt kunstneren er opptatt av og som kommer til syne i utstillingen i Stavanger, hvor hvert arbeid er et blikk tilbake, nesten som en side i en retrospektiv katalog.

Hver skulptur begynner som en fil, enten i Microsoft Word, Illustrator eller CAD, før det blir produsert. I utstillingen på Rogaland Kunstsenter peker prossessen på sjablonger, da pappmodellene i utstillingen er en fysisk manifestasjon av filen og en stedfortreder for et allerede eksisterende kunstverk i et annet materiale et annet sted. Sjablongen er viktig i Keegans kunstnerskap og representeret alt fra en form i sin egen rett til å være kilden til et gjentakende mønster med et uendelige størrelsesforhold.

I det siste tiåret har Keegan jobbet med flere ulike medier, med fokus på fotografi og skulptur. Han fikk først oppmerksomhet for sine gipsplatearbeider fra 2004-2009 som lente seg mot veggene med tekster eller mønstre, trykt eller hugget inn i overflaten. Materialene Keegan bruker finner vi nesten overalt i hverdagen vår og blir som et slags blankt papir. De neste tre årene valgte han å produsere arbeider i stål, skjært ut med laser. Når han så velger å bruke papp i denne utstillingen, understreker han arbeidenes enkelhet og uniforme natur, samt sin interesse for tekst og språk.

En publikasjon med tekster av John Miller og Tom McDonough, samt et blikk på Keegans samarbeidsprosjekter med blant andre Uri Aran, Anna Craycroft, Leslie Hewitt, James Richards og Sara VanDerBeek blir publisert høsten 2015.

Rogaland Kunstsenter is proud to present the first solo exhibition for Matt Keegan in Norway. “Portable Document Format” is an overview of Keegan’s sculptural work since 2006. Originally fabricated in Sheetrock and steel, for this show the selections are presented in cardboard. The works have been fabricated in the exhibition space and print shop located in the basement of the Kunstsenter, and will be recycled at the close of the show. With an economy of means, the artist treats the venue as a 3-dimensional pdf. Like sheetrock, sheet metal, and cold-rolled steel, cardboard is an affordable yet chameleon-like material that comes in standardized sizes. Efficiency, a key concern for the artist and amplified in his presentation in Stavanger, addresses the ability to determine and achieve tasks within a set of parameters.

Each of Keegan’s sculptures begins as a Microsoft Word, Illustrator or CAD file before being fabricated. At Rogaland Kunstsenter, the process alludes to the template– the cardboard models in the exhibition are file and artwork, place-holder and representation of existing artworks. The template plays a central role in Keegan’s practice from its most basic definition as hard form used as a pattern to its more expansive potential as something iterative and full of possible permutation. In his essay for the accompanying publication Thomas McDonough writes: “They are, we might say, paternal / maternal templates, malic in their industrial material and palette, and matrixial in their generative capacity to produce new meanings and combinations.”

Over the past decade, the artist has worked across diverse mediums, with a focus on photography and sculpture. Keegan first came to attention for his series of leaning, carved (text and pattern) and ink-jet printed sheetrock sculptures (2004-2009), a material the artist chose for its ubiquity, as well as its affinity with paper. Over the following three years, sheetrock gave way to industrially produced and laser-cut sheet metal and steel. Rendering his works in cardboard, Keegan performs the task of the artist to reproduce work through an exhibition survey by producing mere representations. Emphasizing the centrality of text and language within the artist’s work, the simplicity and uniformity of this material highlights the words, phrases, and American English vernacular that Keegan employs, and as a collection of work, corresponds with his interest in alternative archival models.

A companion publication published by TKTTK features essays by Thomas McDonough and John Miller, as well as contributions by Uri Aran, Anna Craycroft, Leslie Hewitt, James Richards and Sara VanDerBeek. It will be published Fall 2015.
