Courtesy the Artists: Legenden

Årets sommerskole ved Rogaland Kunstsenter har vært i regi av Courtesy the Artists (Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade with Robbie Acklen).Etter to uker presenteres deler av materialet i en live performance og videoinstallasjon på kunstsenteret. Gruppen har basert verket på legenden om Kong Arthur og dratt inn moderne estetikk fra helse og fitnesskulturen og UnderArmour treningstøy for å se nærmere på de mytiske konstruksjonene rundt maskulinitet og seksualitet, i nåtid og fortid. Teatralske tekster av Alexandro Segade viser, og speiler skeivt, komplottet mot Kong Arthur og er basis for verket som har blitt spilt inn på ulike steder i Rogaland under sommerskoleperioden. Skuespillerne er lokale kunstnere og andre interesserte som spiller ulike roller fra legenden. På kunstsenteret vil arbeidet, som fremdeles er under utvikling, bli vist, og deltagerne spiller ulike scener fra legenden og framfører musikalske stykker som har blitt utviklet i sommerskolen. Publikum blir også del av verket gjennom kvelden.

Courtesy the Artists er et samarbeid mellom kunstnerne Malik Gaines og Alexandro Segade, sammen med gjestekunstner Robbie Acklen fra Los Angeles, og Hiroshi McDonald, som er basert i Berlin. Blant deltakerne finner vi blant andre Matias Kiil Halvorsen, Aleksander Nærbo, Runar Aanestad, Torunn Elisabeth Larsen, Tor Erik Bøe, Andreas Breivik and Claudia Alette Bull.

Live Performance & Video Installation

Following their two week Summer School project, Courtesy the Artists (Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade with Robbie Acklen) presents a live performance and video installation combining Arthurian lore and the gym aesthetics of UnderArmour fitness wear and Men’s Health magazine, exploring mythic constructions of masculinity, sexuality in contemporary and age-old formations. Theatrical texts written by Alexandro Segade, depicting (and queering) the conspirators against King Arthur, form the basis for video-taped performances staged in various locations throughout the Rogaland area, with a cast made up of local artists from Stavanger and the vicinity, each playing different roles from the legends. In the live performance and installation, work-in-progress versions of the videos will be shown, while the performers will act-out scenes and perform music developed during the residency. The audience will be brought into the project through participatory actions and live readings of the texts.

Courtesy the Artists is a collaboration between New York-based artists Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade, with guest artist Robbie Acklen, from Los Angeles. Also joining them is Berlin-based artist Hiroshi McDonald Mori. Performers involved in the collaboration include Matias Kiil Halvorsen, Aleksander Naerbo, Runar Aanestad, Torunn Elisabeth Larsen, Tor Erik Bøe, Andreas Breivik and Claudia.
